Snowdonia Photography Workshop: Exploring the Dramatic Ogwen Valley – 4th May

Join me on the 4th of May for a captivating photography workshop in one of Snowdonia’s most breathtaking locations: the Ogwen Valley. We’ll explore its dramatic landscapes, capture iconic views, and learn how to photograph its diverse features, all within a manageable walking distance.

Why the Ogwen Valley?

The Ogwen Valley is renowned for its rugged beauty, boasting towering peaks, glistening lakes (or “llyns” in Welsh), and cascading waterfalls. Despite its dramatic scenery, the valley offers surprisingly easy access to stunning viewpoints, making it an ideal location for a photography workshop.

Highlights of the Day:

  • Ogwen Outflow: We’ll start at Ogwen Outflow, capturing the waterfalls tumbling beneath the A5 and the historic Roman bridge. This location provides a perfect opportunity to learn about long exposures, filters, and camera basics at a relaxed pace.
  • Cwm Idwal: Venture into the heart of the Glyderau mountains and explore Cwm Idwal, a magnificent glacial bowl. We’ll follow a well-maintained path around Llyn Idwal, capturing stunning views and unique perspectives.
  • Afon Lloer: For a grand finale, we’ll head to Afon Lloer, a picturesque waterfall cascading against the backdrop of the mighty Tryfan. This dramatic location will likely be our sunset photography spot.

Suitable for All:

This workshop is designed for photographers of all abilities, from beginners to experienced enthusiasts. The terrain is relatively easy, with well-maintained paths and manageable distances. However, please be prepared to walk approximately 4 miles (6.5km) throughout the day.

Learning and Skill Development:

Throughout the day, I’ll provide guidance and instruction on various photography techniques, including:

  • Focusing techniques: Learn how to achieve sharp focus in different situations.
  • Tripod usage: Master the art of using a tripod for stability, sharper images and the benefit of slowing your workflow down to aid composition.
  • Filters vs. exposure blending: Understand when to use filters and when to rely on exposure blending techniques.
  • Composition: Develop your compositional eye and learn how to create compelling images.
  • Working with light: Learn how to effectively utilise natural light to enhance your photographs.

Additional Information:

  • Meeting Point: Joe Brown’s in Capel Curig. (You’re also welcome to travel with me from near Wrexham.)
