Saddleworth Moors Photography Walk: Summit Views and The Trinnacle Sunset – 11th July 2026
Embark on a captivating photography adventure through the picturesque Saddleworth Moors on the 11th of July 2026. This workshop invites you to explore the less-travelled corners of the Peak District, culminating in a breathtaking sunset shoot at the iconic Trinnacle rock formation.
Why Saddleworth Moors?
Despite its proximity to bustling Manchester, the Saddleworth Moors offer a tranquil escape with expansive landscapes and hidden gems waiting to be discovered. This workshop will take you off the beaten path, unveiling the unique beauty and photographic potential of this often-overlooked region of the Peak District.
Our Photographic Journey
This adventure is a true photographic walk, blending rewarding hikes with stunning compositions:
- Alderman’s Hill (Summit Views):
- Our adventure begins with a scenic 30-minute hike to the summit of Alderman’s Hill.
- From this vantage point, we’ll capture stunning panoramic views of Dove Stone Reservoir, Dean Rocks, and Ashway Rocks, setting the stage for our day.
- Ashway Rocks (Rugged Perspectives):
- Next, we’ll descend to the reservoir before embarking on a more challenging ascent to Ashway Rocks.
- Here, we’ll be rewarded with dramatic perspectives, looking back towards Alderman’s Hill and capturing the rugged beauty of the landscape.
- The Trinnacle (Sunset Finale):
- As the sun begins its descent, we’ll make our way to the star attraction – The Trinnacle.
- This impressive rock formation offers a truly unique subject for our cameras. The summer months provide the perfect lighting conditions to capture its splendour, as the sun sets dramatically down the valley.

Difficulty Description
Workshop Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging (Hillwalking Experience Recommended)
This workshop is designed as a photographic walk, meaning we’ll be covering a considerable distance over varied terrain. While it’s not a mountaineering expedition, a good level of fitness and some prior experience with hillwalking are definitely recommended.
Here’s what you can expect:
- Distance: We’ll likely be walking around 6-8 miles throughout the day. This will include ascents and descents, so be prepared for a good workout!
- Terrain: The terrain will be varied, with a mix of paved paths, well-maintained trails, and some sections of uneven ground. You might encounter rocks, tree roots, and muddy patches, so sturdy footwear is essential.
- Off-Trail Exploration: At times, we may venture off the main trails to reach specific photography locations. This will require extra care and attention to footing, as the terrain might be uneven or slippery. I’ll be there to point out any potential hazards, but please feel free to ask if you have any concerns.
Key Recommendations:
- Fitness: This workshop is best suited for those with above-average fitness levels. If you’re unsure about your fitness, consider going for a few good walks beforehand to prepare.
- Hillwalking Experience: Prior experience with hillwalking is strongly recommended, as you’ll be more comfortable with the terrain and the challenges it presents.
- Footwear: Invest in a good pair of hiking boots with ankle support and good grip. This will help you navigate the varied terrain safely and comfortably.
This workshop is a fantastic opportunity to combine your love of photography with a rewarding outdoor experience. However, it’s important to be prepared for the physical demands and the challenges of the terrain. If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me before booking.
