Description

Join me on the 10th May for a day dedicated to photographing woodland and bluebells.

One of the seasonal highlights of spring, English Bluebells are a photographer’s dream. In the right places, swathes of bluebells spread across woodland floors creating a vibrant contrast of purple vs green.

Finding good bluebell woods in the Peak District is tough, so I will take you further out and explore areas around Matlock. The aim of the day is to spend some time walking around, exploring woodland and practising our compositional skills and use of the camera before finding a suitable spot for sunset where we can capture the classic sun filtering through the trees, while rays of light spread across the bluebells.

We will meet around 13:00 which will give us plenty of time for the day. Initially, we may choose to head to Cromford Canal to explore the area and hopefully photograph some of the bluebells reflecting in the canal. The light will be strong and harsh, but hopefully with the cover of the trees it will become more diffused.

Once we have finished at the Cromford Canal, if we are doing well for time, we can make a quick detour to photograph the waterfall in Cromford Mills. While not strictly on subject, it would be rude to not photograph the Arkwright Mill while on the same road. We can then look at long exposures which is a bonus.

We will then get some early tea around 16:00 before heading off to find a woodland to explore, photograph and catch the sunset from. While on lunch, if we have time, I will lead an introduction to post-processing in Lightroom which goes through the basics of processing and we will look at some of my images I have taken previously. My usual bluebell woods are fairly easy access but some may find it steep going as the woodlands are not on the flat and require a walk of up-to 30 minutes.

Due to seasonal variances, the bluebells may not be at their peak but the date chosen is generally a reliable date. In some instances we may need to find alternative plans on the day.

Upon booking you will be provided with a questionnaire to fill out which is a requirement of attending. I will also provide a recommended kit list and what to bring.

Throughout the day we will look at techniques such as focusing, using a tripod, use of filters vs exposure blending, composition, working with the light and more.

I am more than happy to discuss other more advanced techniques on 1-2-1 basis as well as to the group, depending on what is beneficial.

The day is tailored around you as much as possible and I strive to give each of you on the course for that day the best day possible. At the end of the day, you will have hopefully learnt new techniques and taken away some imagery you will be proud of. I am a friendly and relaxed tutor and I welcome you to keep in touch with me after the course to ask me any questions you may have looked over on the day. I have also created a Facebook client area where you can keep in touch, share your photos and keep in touch with other attendees from the day.

There will be a maximum group size of 4 meaning there will be plenty of 1-2-1 time. I will be on hand throughout the day for any questions and my focus will be on ensuring you have the best day possible.
