Anglesey Lighthouse Triple: A Coastal Photography Workshop – 9th May
Join me on May 9th for a dedicated photography workshop on the beautiful Isle of Anglesey, where we will focus on capturing the three most prominent and photogenic lighthouse locations: Penmon Point, Llanddwyn Island, and South Stack.
Why Anglesey’s Lighthouses?
This workshop is suited to all levels of photographer, offering rich, varied coastal scenes that allow us to practice diverse techniques—from grand landscape compositions high on cliffs to intimate long exposures capturing the movement of the sea.
Our Iconic Locations:
- Penmon Point (East Anglesey):
- Our starting point, literally a 2-minute walk from the car.
- The lighthouse is beautifully set against the backdrop of Puffin Island.
- Focus: Capturing low-down images of waves crashing on the rocks, and simplified, telephoto compositions of the lighthouse and island.
- Llanddwyn Island (Tŵr Mawr Lighthouse):
- A classic Welsh location with far-reaching views over the sea and towards Eryri (Snowdonia).
- Timing: I have planned to anticipate this location for sunset, as the tide times currently align for low tide access during the golden hour.
- Focus: Capturing the iconic Tŵr Mawr, along with opportunities for beach and rocky long exposures.
- South Stack (West Anglesey):
- Anglesey’s most westerly point, featuring a much more rugged landscape.
- Focus: Shooting from the steps leading down to the lighthouse (a great leading line), or from the dramatic cliffs above. On a clear day, we may even see Ireland!
Our Photographic Journey & Timing
We will meet at a convenient location just outside of Bangor at the Llanfairpwll Park & Ride. If you are travelling via Wrexham, you are welcome to travel with me from my home.
- Start: We begin at Penmon Point to capture the eastern lighthouse and practice long exposures.
- Mid-Day: We move to the west side, visiting either South Stack.
- 17:00 – Cafe break.
- Sunset Finale: We will conclude the day at either Llanddwyn Island, capturing the final, dramatic coastal light.
- Note: Please note there is a fair amount of unavoidable driving involved in this workshop.
Learning and Skill Development
Throughout the day, I’ll provide hands-on instruction and guidance on essential photography techniques:
- Technical Foundations:
- Focusing Techniques: Learn how to achieve tack-sharp focus in varied scenarios.
- Tripod Usage: Master the art of using a tripod for stability, sharper images, and benefiting from a slowed-down workflow that aids composition.
- Filters vs. Exposure Blending: Understand the creative and technical trade-offs between using physical filters and digital exposure blending techniques.
- Creative Vision:
- Composition: Develop your eye and learn practical rules and tips for creating visually compelling and harmonious images.
- Working with Light: Learn how to effectively utilize natural light, especially the unique qualities of winter light, to enhance the mood and impact of your photographs.
- Advanced Techniques: I am always happy to discuss more advanced techniques on a 1-2-1 basis or with the group, depending on your interests and skill levels.
Lunch and Review
- We aim to take a break midway through the day to allow us to get some food and drinks.
- We will have a quick introduction to post-processing techniques in a café if time allows.

Difficulty Description
Below is an explanation of the difficulty for the workshop. It will also largely be dictated by your own perception and also your previous experience in this kind of environment. The rating is a rough guide and in context to the type of workshop e.g. a hill-walking workshop moderate is different to a standard day workshop moderate. I have tried to explain more about the day in the description above also.
This workshop has been rated as easy. All locations are very accessible. There are some steps above South Stack to reach the cliff edges but a 10 minute walk. The walk across Newborough Beach is about 30 minutes but across largely flat and level ground.
