Photography Workshop: Exploring Buxton’s Diverse Landscapes – February 15th
Join me on February 15th for a captivating photography workshop exploring the incredibly varied landscapes surrounding the charming town of Buxton. This unique location offers a stunning mix of limestone and gritstone terrain, providing a diverse range of subjects and opportunities to enhance your photographic skills.
Why Buxton and Its Surroundings?
Buxton is strategically positioned on the border between two distinct regions of the Peak District National Park:
- The White Peak: Characterized by gentle, rolling limestone hills and drystone walls.
- The South-West Peak: Defined by dramatic gritstone edges and moorlands.
This geographical blend gives us access to a fascinating variety of landscapes in a short distance, making it an ideal setting for a rich and varied day of photography.
Our Diverse Itinerary
We will begin our day at 09:45 AM with a meet and greet at the Poole’s Cavern car park. From there, we will embark on a photographic journey tailored to the best light and conditions:
- Solomon’s Temple (Morning Warm-up):
- We’ll start at this Victorian hill marker on Grin Low.
- It offers panoramic views across Buxton and serves as a gentle introduction and warm-up for the day.
- Three Shires Head (Water Focus):
- Next, we head to this picturesque waterfall cascading under a historic packhorse bridge.
- Focus: Capturing the beauty of moving water and practicing the use of ND filters for long-exposure photography.
- High Edge (Afternoon Textures):
- In the afternoon, we’ll explore the fascinating textures of the unique limestone pavement found here, and perhaps incorporate the intriguing World War II bunkers into our compositions.
- Hitter Hill (Sunset Grand Finale):
- As sunset approaches, we’ll make our way to Hitter Hill for breathtaking views over the iconic Parkhouse Hill and Chrome Hill.
- This spectacular backdrop is perfect for capturing the golden hour and sunset.

- Technical Foundations:
- Focusing Techniques: Learn how to achieve tack-sharp focus in varied scenarios.
- Tripod Usage: Master the art of using a tripod for stability, sharper images, and benefiting from a slowed-down workflow that aids composition.
- Filters vs. Exposure Blending: Understand the creative and technical trade-offs between using physical filters and digital exposure blending techniques.
- Creative Vision:
- Composition: Develop your eye and learn practical rules and tips for creating visually compelling and harmonious images.
- Working with Light: Learn how to effectively utilize natural light, especially the unique qualities of winter light, to enhance the mood and impact of your photographs.
- Advanced Techniques: I am always happy to discuss more advanced techniques on a 1-2-1 basis or with the group, depending on your interests and skill levels.
