Peak District Photography Workshop: Unveiling Matlock’s Top Photography Spots – 23rd May
Join me on May 23rd for a captivating photography workshop exploring the often-overlooked beauty and hidden gems of Matlock and its surrounding areas. Having spent five years living there, I’ve developed an intimate knowledge of this charming town’s photographic potential, blending gritstone edges with rolling limestone scenery.
Discover Matlock’s Diverse Landscapes
We’ll embark on a photographic journey through a variety of unique locations, offering something for every photographer:
- Stanton Moor : Explore ancient woodlands, fascinating gritstone formations, and the intriguing Nine Ladies Stone Circle.
- Lumsdale Waterfalls: Experience some of my favourite waterfalls in Derbyshire, providing the perfect setting to master long exposure techniques.
- Rustic Barns: Discover a picturesque abandoned barn near Winster, perfect for capturing rural charm and textures.
- Avenue of Trees: If conditions are right, we’ll visit a stunning avenue of trees above Darley Dale, ideal for capturing the play of light and shadow.
- Robin Hood’s Stride & Nine Stones Close: Photograph a small stone circle (with only four stones, not nine) – usually at sunset.
Suitable for All Levels
This workshop is perfect for photographers of all abilities:
- Beginners: You’ll receive plenty of 1-2-1 guidance and learn fundamental techniques.
- Experienced Photographers: Benefit from my local knowledge, unique location choices, and insights into reading the conditions for the best results.
Learning and Skill Development
Throughout the day, I’ll provide hands-on instruction and guidance on essential photography techniques:
- Technical Foundations:
- Focusing Techniques: Learn how to achieve tack-sharp focus in varied scenarios.
- Tripod Usage: Master the art of using a tripod for stability, sharper images, and benefiting from a slowed-down workflow that aids composition.
- Filters vs. Exposure Blending: Understand the creative and technical trade-offs between using physical filters and digital exposure blending techniques.
- Creative Vision:
- Composition: Develop your eye and learn practical rules and tips for creating visually compelling and harmonious images.
- Working with Light: Learn how to effectively utilize natural light, especially the unique qualities of winter light, to enhance the mood and impact of your photographs.
- Advanced Techniques: I am always happy to discuss more advanced techniques on a 1-2-1 basis or with the group, depending on your interests and skill levels.
Lunch and Image Review
- We’ll break for lunch around 17:30.
- If time permits, we’ll look at images on a laptop to discuss basic processing techniques within Adobe Lightroom.

Difficulty Description
Workshop Difficulty: Easy (with some considerations)
This workshop is rated as “easy”, and most people should be able to attend and complete it comfortably. However, it’s important to understand the terrain and walking distances involved.
Walking Distance:
- You can expect to walk between 3 and 6 miles throughout the day, with breaks between locations.
Terrain:
- Locations are generally within a 15-minute walk from the car park, with return trips between each.
- While some paths are paved, you’ll also encounter natural trails with stable surfaces. These may include rocks, tree roots, and mud, which are unavoidable features of the natural landscape.
- Some sections may involve walking over steep ground, so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
Off-Trail Exploration:
- We may venture off the main path at certain photography locations. I will point out any potential hazards, but please be mindful of your footing and surroundings. If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Key Points:
- While individual locations are relatively easy to access, the cumulative distance covered throughout the day can be significant.
- Please assess your own fitness level and comfort with walking over varied terrain before booking.
This workshop is designed to be enjoyable and accessible, but it’s important to be prepared for moderate walking and some uneven ground.
