Description

Eryri’s (Snowdonia) gem: The Stunning Ogwen Valley Photography Workshop – 21st February

Join me on February 21st to photograph one of the most beautiful and dramatic areas in Wales: the Ogwen Valley in Eryri (Snowdonia). This workshop is designed to deliver high photographic rewards for a relatively easy level of effort, with good access and paths to most locations.

Why The Ogwen Valley In WInter?

The Ogwen Valley boasts some of the most rugged and photogenic mountains south of the Scottish Border. Its popularity stems from the fact that you can reach incredible viewpoints with relative ease.

  • Dramatic Scenery: The valley is dominated by peaks like Tryfan, which looks stunning from all angles, and the formidable Glyderau range.
  • Accessibility: Most locations are easily accessible, with Cwm Idwal being a popular, well-pathed walk suitable for most abilities.
  • Winter Potential: This time of year offers the opportunity for wintery conditions—snow or frost—which enhance the rugged beauty of the mountains. Even without snow, the low winter sun provides excellent light throughout the day.
  • Variety: We will focus on a range of subjects, from cascading waterfalls to dramatic lakes (Llyns) and imposing grand landscapes.

Our Photographic Journey

We will meet at Joe Browns in Capel Curig (due to better signal) before heading into the valley. If convenient, you are also welcome to meet me near Wrexham, from where I will be travelling.

  • Ogwen Outflow (Water Practice):
    • We start by photographing the waterfalls that leave Llyn Ogwen, tumbling under the A5 and the old Roman bridge.
    • Focus: This slow-paced start is perfect for getting acquainted with your camera, practising long exposures, and learning about filters and the basics of composition.
  • Cwm Idwal (Glacial Drama):
    • Next, we head up into this large glacial bowl, one of Snowdonia’s most popular walks.
    • The ascent is barely noticeable over a good path before we reach Llyn Idwal. We’ll stop along the way to capture viewpoints.
    • We will walk around the Llyn (approx. 2.5 miles). An optional small, steep ascent on the far side offers a dramatic view over the Llyn, looking towards Pen-Y-Ole-Wen, with a well-placed foreground tree.
  • Afon Lloer (Sunset Potential):
    • If time allows after our circuit, we’ll head back down and up the valley slightly to visit Afon Lloer, a 15-minute uphill walk.
    • This location features cascading waterfalls set against the mighty Tryfan as a backdrop and could serve as our spectacular sunset location.

This workshop is designed to cater to all photographic abilities, offering new locations even for returning clients.
