Description

Peak District Winter Solstice: A Photography Workshop on the Shortest Day – 21st December

Embrace the magic of the winter solstice in the Peak District as we embark on a photography workshop through a landscape transformed by hopeful frost, snow, and the ethereal light of the shortest day. This workshop is designed to immerse you in the unique beauty of this captivating region, capturing its essence as the sun makes its brief but dramatic appearance.

Why the Peak District in Winter?

Winter casts a unique spell on the Peak District, turning familiar landscapes into a photographer’s wonderland. The low angle of the sun paints the landscape with long shadows and a soft, diffused light that is perfect for photography throughout the day. Frost adorns the trees and rocks, creating intricate patterns and textures that only appear during the coldest months.

Our Photographic Journey

This workshop is designed to be adaptable to the weather conditions, ensuring we make the most of the limited winter solstice light.

  • Sunrise at Ramshaw Rocks (or similar):
    • Our day begins at this dramatic gritstone escarpment to capture the first light of the solstice rising over a frost-covered landscape.
  • Exploring Grand Landscapes and Waterfalls:
    • As the day unfolds, we will venture to a variety of diverse locations. Depending on the conditions, we may explore:
    • Lathkill Dale & Parson’s Tor: Capturing the tranquility of the valley and the dramatic gritstone tors using the low winter sun to create depth and contrast.
    • Three Shires Head: We’ll learn how to capture the beauty of moving water using long exposures and filters, with frost adding a touch of magic to the riverbanks.
  • Sunset at Curbar Edge:
    • As the sun begins its brief descent, we’ll head to this classic gritstone edge. We’ll witness the warm golden light bathe the cliffs in a final farewell, capturing the dramatic interplay of light and shadow.

Learning and Skill Development

Throughout the day, I’ll provide hands-on instruction and guidance on essential photography techniques, catering to all ability levels:

  • Technical Foundations:
    • Focusing Techniques: Learn how to achieve tack-sharp focus in varied scenarios.
    • Tripod Usage: Master the art of using a tripod for stability, sharper images, and benefiting from a slowed-down workflow that aids composition.
    • Filters vs. Exposure Blending: Understand the creative and technical trade-offs between using physical filters and digital exposure blending techniques.
  • Creative Vision:
    • Composition: Develop your eye and learn practical rules and tips for creating visually compelling and harmonious images.
    • Working with Light: Learn how to effectively utilize natural light, especially the unique qualities of winter light, to enhance the mood and impact of your photographs.
  • Advanced Techniques: I am always happy to discuss more advanced techniques on a 1-2-1 basis or with the group, depending on your interests and skill levels.
