Waterfall Photography Workshop: Exploring the Cascades of North Eryri – 13th June

Join me on June 13th for a captivating photography workshop exploring the stunning waterfalls and rivers of North Eryri (Snowdonia). We’ll master long exposure techniques, experiment with filters, and capture the dynamic beauty of these essential Welsh landscapes.

Why Waterfalls in Eryri in June?

While June brings long daylight hours, it’s an ideal time to photograph waterfalls. Overcast conditions, which are common in Eryri, actually enhance the beauty of these cascading waters by diffusing the light, creating a soft, magical atmosphere. This workshop is designed to embrace those conditions and capture stunning images regardless of the weather and keep us out of the harsh light.

Our Waterfall Adventure

We’ll embark on a journey through some of North Eryri’s most picturesque watery locations:

  • Fairy Glen (Start Location):
    • We’ll begin at the enchanting Fairy Glen, a deep gorge with a picturesque river.
    • Focus: Practicing long exposures and filter techniques, capturing the smooth flow of water and the captivating leading lines created by the foam.
    • Alternative Location: If conditions at Fairy Glen are unsuitable due to wet weather which causes slippy rocks, we’ll head to Llanrwst to photograph the historic bridge and ivy-covered tearooms along the riverbank.
  • Swallow Falls:
    • We’ll make a quick stop at the impressive Swallow Falls, capturing its dramatic beauty with various techniques.
  • Ogwen Valley or Llanberis (Afternoon Exploration):
    • We’ll venture further into the heart of Eryri, choosing between the picturesque falls near Ogwen Cottage or the captivating cascades along the Watkin Path (near Pen-y-Pass).
  • Ceunant Mawr Waterfall (Potential Finale):
    • If conditions are right (and recent rainfall is sufficient), we’ll visit the powerful Ceunant Mawr Waterfall in Llanberis, capturing its impressive flow.

Learning and Skill Development

Throughout the day, I’ll provide hands-on guidance and instruction on various essential photography techniques:

  • Technical Foundations:
    • Focusing Techniques: Learn how to achieve sharp focus in dynamic, low-light situations.
    • Tripod Usage: Master the art of using a tripod for stability, sharper images, and benefiting from a slowed-down workflow that aids composition.
    • Filters vs. Exposure Blending: Understand when to use filters (ND, Polariser) and when to rely on exposure blending techniques to manage light.
  • Creative Vision:
    • Composition: Develop your compositional eye and learn how to use the environment (rocks, foam, riverbeds) to create compelling images.
    • Working with Light: Learn how to effectively utilise the diffused, natural light unique to woodland and waterfall settings.
  • Workshop Highlights:
    • Long Exposure Mastery: Learn how to capture the magic of waterfalls with long exposure techniques, creating ethereal effects and showcasing the power of moving water.
    • Filter Techniques: Experiment with different filters to control light and enhance your waterfall photography.
