Autumn Photography Workshop in the Peak District – 1st November
Experience the Peak District’s vibrant autumn colours on this immersive photography workshop. We’ll capture the beauty of the season as it transforms the landscape with stunning shades of yellow, orange, and red.
Why Autumn in the Peak District?
Autumn is a magical time in the Peak District, offering a unique photographic opportunity before winter sets in. The last week of October and the first week of November typically showcase the most vibrant colours, making this the perfect time to explore.
With the sun lower in the sky, the light is excellent throughout the day, providing ideal conditions for photography. We’ll have a flexible itinerary, adapting to the weather and making the most of the conditions – whether it’s capturing grand landscapes in good light or exploring misty woodland scenes if we encounter low fog.
Itinerary
- 09:00 – Meet & Greet: We’ll gather with fellow photographers, enjoy a friendly meet-and-greet, and discuss the plan for the day.
- Upper Moor (Darley Dale): Our first stop will be this stunning avenue of trees, perfect for capturing the essence of autumn colour. If we’re lucky, mist or fog will add an extra layer of atmosphere to our photographs.
- Lumsdale Waterfalls: Next, we’ll head to one of Derbyshire’s best waterfalls. Here, we’ll refine our long-exposure techniques to capture the cascades flowing past old mills.
- Stanton Moor (Time Permitting): We’ll visit the Nine Ladies Stone Circle, a prehistoric monument framed by beautiful autumnal birch trees.
- Curbar Edge (Sunset Location): As the day draws to a close, we’ll head to Curbar Edge for a breathtaking sunset. This viewpoint offers stunning vistas over gritstone edges, with birch trees below catching the last light of the day.
Lunch and Image Review:
We’ll break for lunch around 13:00, and if time allows, I’ll showcase some of my previous images and discuss basic processing techniques in Adobe Lightroom.
What You’ll Learn
Throughout the day, I’ll provide guidance and instruction on a variety of photographic techniques, including:
- Focusing methods: Learn how to achieve critical focus in different situations.
- Tripod use: Master the art of using a tripod for stability and sharper images, and discover how it can benefit your composition by slowing down your workflow.
- Filters vs. exposure blending: Understand when to use filters and when to rely on exposure blending techniques for greater control over your images.
- Composition: Develop your compositional eye and learn how to create more compelling photographs.
- Working with light: Learn how to effectively utilise natural light to enhance your photographs.
I’m also happy to discuss more advanced techniques on a 1-2-1 basis or with the group, depending on your interests and skill levels.
What If the Weather Is Poor?
The Peak District weather can be unpredictable, but don’t worry! Unless it’s torrential rain all day, we’ll still have plenty of fantastic photographic opportunities. Overcast days are ideal for capturing the beauty of waterfalls, and I have a range of alternative locations in mind based on the conditions. I’ll use forecasts, webcams, and my local knowledge to ensure we get to the best spots, even if that means adapting the itinerary throughout the day.

Difficulty Description
Workshop Difficulty: Easy (with Important Considerations)
This workshop is categorized as “easy,” and designed for general accessibility. However, “easy” is relative, and your personal experience and perception will play a role. Please carefully consider the following to ensure this workshop aligns with your comfort level:
- Terrain:
- Locations are typically within a 15-minute walk from parking, with return trips between sites.
- Expect varied terrain, including paved paths and natural trails. Natural trails may feature stable surfaces, but also include unavoidable elements such as rocks, roots, and mud.
- Some sections may involve steep inclines.
- While we primarily stay on established, well-used paths, we may venture slightly off-trail at photography locations. Extra caution is required in these areas, and your workshop leader will highlight any potential hazards.
- Distance:
- Despite the “easy” rating, the cumulative distance covered throughout the day can range from 3 to 6 miles.
- Personal Assessment:
- Your individual fitness level and experience with outdoor environments will influence your perception of the workshop’s difficulty.
In summary: This workshop is suitable for most individuals with reasonable mobility. However, be prepared for moderate walking distances, varied terrain, and potential off-trail excursions. If you have any concerns about your ability to participate, please contact the workshop leader for clarification.
