Matlock Photography Exploration: Unveiling Hidden Gems – 13th September
Join me on a photographic journey through the picturesque landscapes and charming villages surrounding Matlock on the 13th of September. This workshop will unveil the hidden gems of this often-overlooked region, capturing its unique beauty and showcasing its diverse photographic potential.
Why Matlock?
While Matlock may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking about Peak District photography, it offers a wealth of hidden gems and captivating scenes. From dramatic gritstone outcrops and ancient stone circles to rustic barns and cascading waterfalls, this area provides a diverse range of subjects for photographers of all levels.
Our Potential Locations:
- Upper Moor: We’ll begin our exploration at Upper Moor, now a famous scene of contrasts. Gorgeous oaks lining one side of the path while managed woodland to the left. Working well in a variety of conditions and Derbyshire’s answer to the Dark Hedges.
- Stanton Moor and Robin Hood’s Stride: Next, we’ll venture to Stanton Moor and Robin Hood’s Stride, where we’ll discover a fascinating blend of woodland, gritstone formations, and ancient history. We’ll explore the Nine Ladies Stone Circle, capture the unique character of the Balancing Tor, and photograph the expansive views from Robin Hood’s Stride.
- Rustic Charm: For those who appreciate the beauty of decay, we’ll visit a charming abandoned barn near Winster. This rustic structure, with its weathered timbers and crumbling walls, offers a captivating subject for photographers seeking to capture the passage of time and the beauty of imperfection.
- Lumsdale’s Waterfalls: No trip to Matlock would be complete without experiencing the enchanting Lumsdale Valley. We’ll wander through this hidden gem, capturing the beauty of its cascading waterfalls, moss-covered rocks, and lush vegetation.
What to Expect:
- A Relaxed Pace: This workshop is designed with a relaxed pace, allowing ample time for photography, learning, and enjoying the scenery. We’ll choose locations based on the group’s preferences and the weather conditions, ensuring a comfortable and rewarding experience for everyone.
- Emphasis on Learning: While capturing stunning images is a key goal, this workshop also prioritises learning and skill development. I’ll provide personalised guidance and instruction throughout the day, catering to different experience levels and interests.
- Weather Adaptability: The Peak District weather can be unpredictable, but I’m well-equipped to handle various conditions. We’ll make the most of the available light and explore alternative locations if needed, ensuring a rewarding experience regardless of the weather.
Itinerary:
- 12:00 PM: Meet and greet at our designated location, where we’ll get to know each other and discuss the plan for the day.
- Afternoon: Explore Stanton Moor, Lumsdale, and the abandoned barn near Winster, capturing the unique character of each location.
- 4:00 PM: Break for food and an optional introduction to Lightroom post-processing techniques.
- Late Afternoon/Sunset: Head to Robin Hood’s Stride and Nine Stones Close.
- 8:00 PM: Conclude the workshop after our photography session.

Difficulty Description
Workshop Difficulty: Easy (with some considerations)
This workshop is rated as “easy”, and most people should be able to attend and complete it comfortably. However, it’s important to understand the terrain and walking distances involved.
Walking Distance:
- You can expect to walk between 3 and 6 miles throughout the day, with breaks between locations.
Terrain:
- Locations are generally within a 15-minute walk from the car park, with return trips between each.
- While some paths are paved, you’ll also encounter natural trails with stable surfaces. These may include rocks, tree roots, and mud, which are unavoidable features of the natural landscape.
- Some sections may involve walking over steep ground, so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
Off-Trail Exploration:
- We may venture off the main path at certain photography locations. I will point out any potential hazards, but please be mindful of your footing and surroundings. If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Key Points:
- While individual locations are relatively easy to access, the cumulative distance covered throughout the day can be significant.
- Please assess your own fitness level and comfort with walking over varied terrain before booking.
This workshop is designed to be enjoyable and accessible, but it’s important to be prepared for moderate walking and some uneven ground.
