Peak District Through The Lens: A Day of Chasing the Light – 19th July

Come and join me on a fantastic photography workshop in the Peak District on July 19th! This workshop is all about flexibility and making the most of the day, no matter what the weather throws at us. We won’t have a strict plan, which means we can explore different locations and really chase the best light and photo opportunities.

Who should come along?

This workshop is perfect for anyone who loves photography, regardless of your experience level. If you’re a complete beginner, that’s fantastic! We’ll have lots of time to go over the basics, and I’ll be there to guide you every step of the way. You’ll learn how to use your camera, compose great shots, and even do some basic editing.

If you’re a more experienced photographer, you’re still very welcome! You might enjoy seeing how I choose locations based on the conditions, and you can pick up some new ideas and techniques. Plus, it’s always fun to explore new places with a group of like-minded people.

What will we get up to?

  • Starting with Waterfalls: We’ll probably begin our day by visiting a beautiful waterfall. This will be a great way to get to know each other and for me to understand your photography experience. We’ll also take the opportunity to practice some essential techniques, like capturing the movement of water with long exposures and using filters to control the light.
  • Following the Light: After our waterfall warm-up, we’ll let the weather be our guide! The Peak District has so much to offer, and we’ll choose our next destination based on where the light is most interesting. We might head to some stunning viewpoints with dramatic cliff edges or explore the hidden beauty of limestone valleys. The great thing about the Peak District is that many of the best spots are easy to reach, so we can make the most of our time and capture some amazing photos.
  • Weatherproof Plans: If the weather isn’t playing ball, don’t worry! I have plenty of backup options that work well in different conditions. We might visit the fascinating Magpie Mine, with its industrial history, or the mysterious Nine Ladies Stone Circle, steeped in ancient legends. We could also explore the vast landscapes of Upper Moor or discover other hidden gems. I’m always ready to adapt and make sure we have a fantastic day of photography, regardless of the weather.

Meeting Up and the Day’s Flow:

  • We’ll meet at 1:30 PM at our designated meeting point. This will be a chance to say hello, introduce ourselves, and have a chat about the plan for the day. I’ll share my thoughts on the weather and the locations we might visit, and we can discuss any preferences or questions you might have.
  • Around 5:30 PM, we’ll take a break from photography to enjoy a relaxed meal together. This will be a great opportunity to refuel, share stories, and discuss our experiences from the day. If we have time, I’ll also do a quick introduction to Adobe Lightroom, showing you some basic editing techniques to enhance your photos.
  • Our workshop will finish around 9:30 PM, after we’ve captured the beautiful colours of the sunset.

Important Things to Note:

  • Easy Going: The walks during this workshop will be generally easy, but there might be some short uphill sections. I’ll always make sure the locations we choose are suitable for everyone in the group, and we can take breaks whenever needed.
  • Weather Wisdom: The weather in the Peak District can be unpredictable, but that’s all part of the adventure! I’m experienced in photographing in all kinds of conditions, and I know plenty of places that work well even if it’s cloudy or raining. We might even try to “chase the light,” using weather forecasts and my local knowledge to find the best spots throughout the day.
  • Booking and Information: When you book your place, you’ll receive an email with all the details you need, including the meeting point, a list of things to bring, some discount codes for photography gear, and a questionnaire. The questionnaire helps me get to know you a little better so I can plan the day to suit everyone’s interests and experience levels.

What will you learn?

  • Photography Fundamentals: We’ll cover a range of essential photography techniques, including how to focus correctly, use a tripod effectively, understand filters and exposure blending, compose stunning shots, and work with the natural light to create beautiful images.
  • Advanced Techniques: If you’re interested in learning more advanced techniques, I’m happy to discuss those too, either one-on-one or with the whole group.
  • Ongoing Support: I want you to have a fantastic day and come away with photos you’re proud of. I’m always happy to answer any questions you have, both during the workshop and afterwards. You’ll also be invited to join my Facebook group, where you can connect with other photographers, share your work, and continue learning.

Group Size and Booking:

  • Small and Personal: To ensure everyone gets individual attention and support, the group size will be limited to a maximum of 4 people. This creates a friendly and relaxed atmosphere where you can feel comfortable asking questions and learning at your own pace.
  • Booking Your Place: To secure your spot on the workshop, there’s a £40 deposit. The remaining balance is due 6 weeks before the workshop date.

If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I’m really looking forward to exploring the Peak District with you and helping you capture some amazing photos!

Difficulty Description

Workshop Difficulty: Easy (with some considerations)

This workshop is rated as “easy”, and most people should be able to attend and complete it comfortably. However, it’s important to understand the terrain and walking distances involved.

Walking Distance:

  • You can expect to walk between 3 and 6 miles throughout the day, with breaks between locations.

Terrain:

  • Locations are generally within a 15-minute walk from the car park, with return trips between each.
  • While some paths are paved, you’ll also encounter natural trails with stable surfaces. These may include rocks, tree roots, and mud, which are unavoidable features of the natural landscape.
  • Some sections may involve walking over steep ground, so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.

Off-Trail Exploration:

  • We may venture off the main path at certain photography locations. I will point out any potential hazards, but please be mindful of your footing and surroundings. If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Key Points:

  • While individual locations are relatively easy to access, the cumulative distance covered throughout the day can be significant.
  • Please assess your own fitness level and comfort with walking over varied terrain before booking.

This workshop is designed to be enjoyable and accessible, but it’s important to be prepared for moderate walking and some uneven ground.
