Twr Mawr Lighthouse sits at the nose of Llanddwyn Island on Newborough Beach on the Isle of Anglesey and is such an iconic scene in Wales looking over to the Snowdonia mountains. The beach is one of my favourites to go to and I usually visit the lighthouse but after 8 or 9 visits I finally got some decent light to capture the beauty of this place in.

Anglesey’s Iconic Lighthouses: A Photographic Exploration of Coastal Beauty – 8th November

Join me on a captivating photographic adventure along the rugged and enchanting coastline of Anglesey on November 8th. This workshop is designed to immerse you in the beauty of this island’s maritime heritage, as we explore three iconic lighthouses: Penmon Point, Llandwyn Island, and South Stack. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just starting your journey, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to capture the dramatic interplay of light and shadow on these captivating structures, while honing your skills and expanding your creative vision.

Why Anglesey’s Lighthouses?

Anglesey, an island steeped in history and natural beauty, boasts a coastline that is both dramatic and diverse. Its iconic lighthouses, each with its own unique character and setting, stand as sentinels against the elements, guiding seafarers and inspiring photographers. This workshop will allow you to:

  • Discover the Charm of Penmon Point: Nestled on the eastern side of the island, Penmon Point’s elegant lighthouse offers a picturesque subject against the backdrop of Puffin Island. We’ll explore the surrounding coastline, capturing the drama of waves crashing against the rocks, and experiment with different compositions to highlight the lighthouse’s unique form.
  • Embrace the Beauty of Llandwyn Island: Journey to Llandwyn Island, where the picturesque Tŵr Mawr Lighthouse stands proudly amidst a stunning coastal landscape. With sweeping views across to Snowdonia, this location offers a wealth of photographic opportunities. We’ll capture the lighthouse bathed in the warm glow of the afternoon sun, explore the island’s diverse textures and features, and create images that evoke a sense of tranquility and wonder.
  • Experience the Rugged Grandeur of South Stack: Venture to South Stack, the most westerly point of Anglesey, where the dramatic cliffs and rugged coastline offer a stark contrast to the gentler landscapes of Penmon and Llandwyn. Here, we’ll capture the iconic lighthouse from the steep steps leading down to its base, and explore the surrounding cliffs to find unique perspectives and compositions that showcase the raw power and beauty of the sea.

What to Expect:

  • Technical and Creative Guidance: Throughout the day, I’ll be there to provide expert tuition and guidance, helping you to develop your photography skills and expand your creative vision. We’ll cover a range of techniques, including:
    • Composition: Mastering the art of arranging elements within the frame to create visually compelling and harmonious photographs.
    • Focusing: Ensuring your images are tack-sharp, capturing the intricate details of the landscape and the lighthouses.
    • Tripod Usage: Utilising tripods effectively to achieve stability, maximise image sharpness, and enhance compositional awareness.
    • Filters and Exposure Blending: Exploring the creative possibilities of filters and exposure blending, learning how to control light, enhance dynamic range, and create stunning effects in your images.
    • Working with Light: Understanding how to utilize natural light to evoke mood, create depth, and enhance the beauty of your subjects.
  • Weather Adaptability: Anglesey’s weather can be unpredictable, but we’ll embrace the elements and adapt our plans accordingly. I’ll share my knowledge of the area and weather forecasting tools to ensure we make the most of the conditions, capturing stunning images regardless of the weather.
  • Relaxed and Supportive Environment: I foster a friendly and relaxed atmosphere where you can feel comfortable asking questions, experimenting with new techniques, and sharing your passion for photography.

Itinerary:

  • Morning: We’ll meet near Bangor, where I’ll provide a warm welcome and introduce you to the plan for the day. Then, we’ll journey across the Menai Bridge to Penmon Point, where we’ll begin our photographic exploration.
  • Midday: We’ll take a break from photography to enjoy a delicious lunch at a local café. This will also be a chance to review our images, discuss our experiences, and enjoy a quick introduction to Lightroom post-processing techniques.
  • Afternoon: Depending on the weather and tides, we’ll head to either Llandwyn Island or South Stack, immersing ourselves in the unique beauty of each location and capturing its essence through our lenses.
  • Sunset: As the day draws to a close, we’ll head to our chosen lighthouse location to capture the magic of the golden hour. We’ll experiment with different compositions and techniques, capturing the dramatic interplay of light and shadow as the sun dips below the horizon.

Difficulty Description

Below is an explanation of the difficulty for the workshop. It will also largely be dictated by your own perception and also your previous experience in this kind of environment. The rating is a rough guide and in context to the type of workshop e.g. a hill-walking workshop moderate is different to a standard day workshop moderate. I have tried to explain more about the day in the description above also.

This workshop has been rated as easy. All locations are very accessible. There are some steps above South Stack to reach the cliff edges but a 10 minute walk. The walk across Newborough Beach is about 30 minutes but across largely flat and level ground.
