Kinder Northern Edges (July 13th 2025)
£40.00 – £150.00
Description
Want to photograph and explore the highest summit in the Peak District? Looking for a workshop with a little bit of a difference? Then why not join me in photographing the northern edges high up on Kinder Scout in the Peak District?
Kinder Scout is a massive mountain plateau and with exploration offers some of the best photographic opportunities in the Peak District. It can be a marmite mountain but if you know where to look, I assure you there is plenty to photograph. On this workshop we will take in a couple of classics which work well at this time of year. The summer months is when the sun sets further north and as such, anything on the northern edge works best.
We will start our day meeting near where the Snake Inn used to be and head up via Fair Brook. On this lovely walk there are multiple waterfalls to photograph including the classic composition of the trident waterfall cascading over a rocky face with our route, Kinder Scout as a backdrop. This particular locations is a little tricky to descend so please bare this in mind, although there are other opportunities nearby or from above. I’ve not struggled to get anyone down yet but please bare this in mind.
Once we have photographed these waterfalls, we will continue upwards on to the plateau. We will arrive near Fairbrook Naze which is actually going to be our sunset location. We will take a walk along the northern edge over to the Boxing Gloves, a little gritstone formation which as you may guess ressemble a set of Boxing Gloves. The light should be in the right place at this time of year to capture these.
Once we have done here we will walk back to Fairbrook Naze. Depending on what time is like, we may add some bonus compositions as we spot them or walk a bit further to the Seal Stones. However our main objective here is Fairbrook Naze itself. Another gritstone formation which almost resembles the Salt Cellar on Derwent Edge, albeit a little smaller. This classic composition looks over our route up Fair Brook to give us a sense of where we have come from. The formation catches the golden light at sunset perfectly at this time of year and will make a fantastic subject.
Once we have done the sunset, we will make our way back down. The walk will be about 1 hour back to our cars so make sure you bring a head torch with you and are comfortable walking in the dark.
This day is a photographic walk and as such you may walk up to 8 miles over hill walking terrain, so hill walking experience and a good level of fitness is preferred. It is also a day when there might be less time on camera than one of my typical workshops, as we will spend a lot of time walking between spots. We can chat about all things photographic (and not!) during this time, but if you are newer to landscape photography you may wish to join a classic workshop with me on another date. This day is really designed to take people that bit further and explore new subjects where most workshops won’t go.
Upon booking you will be sent an order confirmation email which includes meeting details, kit-list, discount codes and a questionnaire for you to fill out. This questionnaire just allows me to get information about you, so I can plan the day appropriately for the whole group.
Throughout the day we will look at techniques such as focusing, using tripods, use of filters vs exposure blending, composition, working with the light and more.
I am more than happy to discuss other more advanced techniques on 1-2-1 basis as well as to the group, depending on what is beneficial.
The day is tailored around you as much as possible and I strive to give each of you on the course for that day the best day possible. At the end of the day, you will have hopefully learnt new techniques and taken away some imagery you will be proud of. I am a friendly and relaxed tutor and I welcome you to keep in touch with me after the course to ask me any questions you may have looked over on the day. I have also created a Facebook client area where you can keep in touch, share your photos and keep in touch with other attendees from the day.
There will be a maximum group size of 4 meaning there will be plenty of 1-2-1 time. I will be on hand throughout the day for any questions and my focus will be on ensuring you have the best day possible.
There is a £40 deposit required to secure your place on this workshop with the balance due no later than 6 weeks before the workshop.
