Lake Distict Residential Photography Workshop (September 25th to 28th 2025)
£200.00 – £895.00
Description
Join me for a 4-day workshop in the Lake District between September 25th and 28th 2025. We will spend our 4 days photographing stunning mountain views from easy-access locations, beautiful tarns, dramatic waterfalls and of course stunning vistas from the lakeside.
I love the Lake District and have been visiting before I even got into photography. visiting the width and breadth of the National Park and finding all the nooks and crannies. I have spent a lot of time high up in the mountains but an equal amount of time visiting the low-down parts, so I’ll have plenty of locations we can visit with easy access. This also means I can tailor the workshop to the group, I am advertising it as a easy/medium access workshop and locations will be planned accordingly but if we have a group who are happy with a walk we may do something a bit further.
The workshop has been planned for 3 full days of photography and on the final day we will still work until 13:00 which will still allow a good amount of time out with the camera but a reasonable finish time to allow people to travel back home.
I have booked us a self-catering cottage that couldn’t be in a better location. We will be based in Hartstop which has Kirkstone Pass one way and Ullswater the other, all within a 10-minute drive. We will also have Brother’s Water within walking distance with stunning views up to High Hartstop Dodd. We have Deep Dale just around the corner too and if people fancy a hill walk, Angle Tarn is just above the cottage. We are in a fairly central location with easy access to places such as the Duke of Portland Boathouse, Aira Force and Ullswater. Places such as Keswick and Ambleside are a short throw away too which are both good springboards for other photography locations which I’ll list in the itinerary below.
The cottage has all the amenities we will require including Wi-Fi, Washing Machine, full kitchen with cooking facilities etc. There is a large lounge for our downtime and areas where we can do post-processing as well. A self-catering cottage allows us to be flexible with our timings and come and go as we please, so we are not bound to the food serving times of a pub or cafe. It also allows us to have a private social area where we can chat all things photography and life, as well as look at post-processing. However, if we do happen to be back in time, you are more than welcome to eat out too. Because of dietary requirements a lot of people have previously cooked for themselves but some groups have taken it in turns to cook. It is totally up to you!
The cottage has 2 x double bedrooms and 2 x single bedrooms and they will be allocated on a booking basis. There are also 2 bathrooms.
Below is a rough itinerary of the 4 days. This is completely hypothetical and will depend on the weather but it should give you a good idea of the locations we may go to. I have also put the start time on the first day as 13:00 which should give us a full day of shooting. We will break around 16:00 to check into the cottage and drop things off before shooting sunset. We will mainly concentrate on sunrises and sunsets with a couple of extra locations thrown in – this allows us to have a bit of downtime in the day, get some food and do post-processing etc before heading back out. We will still be out for between 6 to 8 hours depending.
Day 1: Shoot waterfalls nearby such as Aira Force. We can also go over to Ambleside and shoot Stock Ghyll. Check into the cottage before heading out for sunset at Walla Crag.
Day 2: Sunrise from Brother’s Water which is close by followed by a walk up Deep Dale to photograph the waterfalls with mountain vistas. Return to cottage and head out later heading to Keswick to shoot Derwent Water at sunset. There are a few viewpoints we can explore here.
Day 3: Sunrise at Castlerigg Stone Circle near Keswick and then head to Tewet Tarn to shoot the view of the tarn and Blencathra. Head back to the cottage and then head out again to shoot Ashness Bridge and Surprise View before heading to Latrigg for sunset.
Day 4: Sunrise at Blea Tarn. Head back to the cottage to check out. Go to the Duke of Portland and then head up Gowbarrow Fell which is a relatively easy walk with stunning views over the mountains. Finish approx 13:00.
The above is completely hypothetical and there are so many more locations we can cover as well. I will choose locations based on the weather to maximise our time when we are out. Other places could be Buttermere, Cat Bells, Coniston Water, Wast Water, Tarn Hows, Cathedral Cavern etc. I’ll have plenty up my sleeve.
Upon booking you will be sent an order confirmation email that includes meeting details, a kit-list, discount codes and a questionnaire for you to fill out. This questionnaire just allows me to get information about you so I can plan the day appropriately for the whole group.
What if the weather is poor? Don’t worry, unless it’s torrential all day, I have plenty of locations that suit a variety of weather. With 4 days to play with, we also heighten our chances of seeing good light. With my experience, you will still get to the best locations possible and you will still get some great images, for example waterfalls are brilliant for those overcast days. As we are in the UK, we see more grey than we do yellow and I am well adapted to getting us to the best spots if we need to change itinerary. This may even include chasing the light, with my knowledge of how the weather works in certain areas and using forecasts, webcams and other tools on the day to help us make those decisions, which I will share with you. We will spend a lot of time working on technique and composition and most of the day is designed to work up until that hopeful sunset so you have the skills to get the best you can at the end of the day. So even if we don’t get the weather or even that sunset you will have learnt a load of new skills, even if you are a more advanced photographer which you can take away with you and use on your next photographic outing.
The workshop is tailored around you as much as possible and I strive to give each of you the most attention I can to help you achieve what you wish to. At the end of the course, you will have hopefully learnt new techniques and taken away some imagery you will be proud of. I am a friendly and relaxed tutor and I welcome you to keep in touch with me after the course to ask me any questions you may have looked over. I have also created a Facebook client area where you can keep in touch, share your photos and keep in touch with other attendees from the day.
There will be a maximum group size of 4 meaning there will be plenty of 1-2-1 time. I will be on hand throughout the weekend for any questions and my focus will be on ensuring you have the best day possible.
